• DNA virus under herpesviridae and the largest among
• causes enlargement of infected cells
• can be isolated or present in body fluids and tissues
• transmitted through oral route, sexual contact, tissue transplantation, blood transfusion and congenital transmission
• congenital and neonata infection

  • cytomegalovirus - most common
  • neonatal CMV - acquired through delivery of infant
• drug recommended for CMV is ganciclovir and the alternative drug is foscarnet
