This is used as an alternative to prison and is given for less serious crimes such as damage to property, assault or benefit fraud.
13 requirements
There are 13 different requirements an offender must follow when serving a community sentence such as:
Up to 300 hours of unpaid work (e.g. removing graffiti)
Keeping to a curfew
Attending programmes like drug rehabilitation
They may also have restrictions on where they can go (e.g. electronic tagging)
E.g Wayne Rooney
after being caught drink-driving, was banned from driving for 2 years and given 100 hours of unpaid work (working with adults with learning difficulties in a garden centre)
E.G cantona
Had been arrested after kicking an opposition fan during a match.
Banned from playing for 8 months and completed 120 hours of community service coaching football to young children in Salford.
This is thought to be about 15 times cheaper than prison short prison sentences and more effective at reducing reoffending, but the public do not always see it as enough of a punishment.
