food resources

  • what are the physical factors affecting food security?
climate - droughts -> crops can't grow and livestock die reducing food produced. increase in tropical storms -> crops get damaged form flood water so a low yield is produced
  • what are the human factors affecting food security?
diseases - eg. aids and malaria kill people so less people are able to work and harvest crops therefore reducing the crop yield
pests - there is an increase due to climate change -> more areas are affected which damages and kills crops so there's a lower crop yield
technology - LICs lack technology that would advance irrigation methods -> farmers struggle to water their crops effectively so they cannot produce large amounts of crops
  • what are the human factors affecting food security? pt 2
water stress - climate change was caused this to become a big issue -> farmers have less and unreliable water leading to crops and livestock to die which reduces the amount of food harvested
conflict - crops get damaged from fighting and no crops are farmed creating a food shortage
poverty - people are stuck in a cycle of poverty, low incomes -> they cannot buy nutritious foods so the family struggle for energy to go the school/work and cannot make an income
  • what causes food insecurity?
famine - widespread extreme shortage of food -> people have malnutrition which can make them very ill and even die
undernutrition - not having access to enough vitamins and minerals -> people suffer from illness or health issues from a weakened immune system -> they are unable to work to get an income or go to school
rising prices - this will increase the cost of producing food so farmers have to put up their prices for their products making it more expensive
  • what causes food insecurity? pt2
rising prices - food can become in short supply because of weather events, climate change or conflict so there is less food to sell -> the price will then increase so farmers ensure they can make enough food
social unrest - rising prices creates tension among people -> causes protests which can lead to violence
soil erosion - removal of the fertile top layer of the soil -> less fertile soil to grow crops so less can be sold
