  • 1 - Make sure all extraneous factors of arrest are considered as to not alter suspects mental headspace and get a false confession 

    How - If suspect is young/old or has mental health issues, ensure they are treated in a humane and calm way so they don't get scared or confused; make sure any arrests are made calmy - if done at night with no violent interrogations for long periods; ensure suspect is feeling as not anxious or stressed as they can and if intoxicated wait until sober to interview; make sure no coercive leading questions are asked in interview

  • 2 - Train police on cognitive interviewing 

    How - make police attend cognitive interview training once a month for a day/half a day to refresh their knowledge of it
    Why - Memon and Highman suggest that the reason police don't use CI interview techniques is because they are trained very minimally on it (only four hours)
  • 3 - Ensure that suspects/witnesses feel comfortable in environment so they are more likely to be honest
    How - this can be done by pre-planning some questions from evidence gather so far about the crime and setting aside time to explain situation to suspect/witness and answer any questions they have calmy, and patiently to establish rapport with them
    Why - PEACE model of interview: Preparation and planning; engage and explain; account, clarification and challenge; closure and evaluation - ethical and considerate to increase rapport and chance of truth
