• Ether was used in 1846 by William Morton to complete a tooth removal operation.
• Unfortunately, ether is highly flammable, which poses serious problems. After all, light for surgeries during this time was provided by candle.
• It also irritated the lungs and could make the patient cough; a risky move during surgery.
