Koch

Cards (5)

  • Koch was conducting his research during the Franco-Prussian War and he was funded in order to beat France's medical discoveries led by Louis Pasteur.
  • He was particularly interested in the disease anthrax, which can kill both animals and humans.
  • He used agar jelly to stop the bacteria from moving as easily but still providing the bacteria enough nutrients for bacteria to grow.
  • He also pioneered new ways to see the bacteria clearly by using various dyes to stain the microbes.
  • He took the anthrax bacterium from a dead sheep, isolated it and injected it into mouse one. When the mouse died, he cut it open, extracted the bacterium again and injected it into mouse two. This went on for some time, until Koch had infected 20 mice with the same bacterium and results.
