  • Nazis moved to 'total war' in 1943 after they began to lose
  • The Germans lost the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943 to the Russians and as a result the Nazi forces started to retreat back to Berlin. 
  • Goebbels wanted to get all civilians involved to increase the amount of weapons being produced to fight the allies. This was called 'Total War'. 
  • 3 million women between the ages of 17 and 45 were called to work. Only 1 million turned-up. 
  •  Shortages became worse: hair dye banned; civilian clothes stopped being made and professional sport was ended. 
  • From 1943 bombing of German cities stepped up as the American planes started joining in. In July 1943 half of Hamburg was destroyed and more than 40,000 civilians killed.
