  • Social-emotional reciprocity
    • normal back and forth communication,this lacks in individuals with ASD
    • they may not initiate social interactions or respond to other peoples attempt to do so,one-sided
    • cant maintain the normal flow of a conversation
    • when someone with ASD attempts to interact it maybe awkward or inappropriate behaviour(touching)
  • Nonverbal communication
    • eye-contact and social smiling are not used as much
    • facial expressions may be exaggerated or limited
    • gestures such as pointing may be used in the wrong way
    • they may not face the person they are talking to or stand too close
    • their non-verbal cues might not match their emotions,showing a different emotion to what their voice sounds like
  • Problems developing and maintaining relationships
    • struggle to understand the thoughts and feelings of others,hard to see things from other peoples point of view
    • trouble adapting their behaviour to fit social situations,they dont know the unwritten rules that apply in social settings
    • may show emotions inappropriately
    • may not pick up on cues from other people
    • may not seek friendships,often play on their own
