Physical Properties of Matter

• Malleability - ability of metals to be flattened into sheets without breaking
• Ductility - ability of metals to be drawn into wires
• Elasticity - ability of an object to be stretched and then return to its original shape
• Solubility - amount of solute that be dissolved in a given amount of solvent at any given temperature
• surface tension - property of liquid to draw the surface molecules into the body of a liquid and reduces its surface area
• Viscosity - resistance of fluid to flow
• Capillarity - ability of liquids to rise through tubes
• Luster - ability of metals to reflect light
• hardness - ability to withstand being scratched, cut or dented
• brittleness - ability of metals to break suddenly under tension
• porosity - capacity of some materials to absorb or release liquids or gases
• More porous material, less dense
• permeability - allow water/gas to attract with each other
• cohesion - 2 or more same molecules attract
• adhesion - 2 or more different molecules attract
• tenacity - resistance of material to breakage
• specific gravity - ration of mineral's weight to the weight of an equal volume of water
• magnetism - ability to be attracted to magnet
• MAGNETISM

  paramagnetic - weakly attracted to a magnetic field due to unpaired electrons
