Cell division by mitosis

• Human body cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes
• A gamete have 23 single chromosomes. Whereas a body cell has 46 (23 pairs)
• The cell cycle:

  1. The DNA replicates inside the nucleus and forms 2 copies of each chromosome which also grows the cell itself and copies its internals such as mitochondria and ribosomes.
  2. One set of chromosomes is pulled to the end of the cell which then divides the nucleus into two.
  3. The cytoplasm and cell membrane then divide to form 2 identical cells.
• Human body cells contain two types of each chromosome (female's chromosome + male's chromosome)
• Mitosis is essential for growth and repair of organisms.
