In 1601 Essex gathered about 300 supporters. Rumors of treason and rebellion began to spread
When four privy councillors went to his house to question him, Essex took the hostage. He marched to the centre of London with 200 followers
Essex underestimated the queen. Robert Cecil labelled Essex as a traitor. Many of the rebels were offered a pardon and abandoned Essex, who returned home
When he returned home, he found that the hostages had been released. He was arrested and accused of treason. The rebellion lasted 12 hours
Two weeks later, Essex was put on trial. He named the other rebels in an attempt to save his soul, and was executed on 25th February 1601 in a private execution. Most of the other rebels were just fined
