  • In 1601 Essex gathered about 300 supporters. Rumors of treason and rebellion began to spread
  • When four privy councillors went to his house to question him, Essex took the hostage. He marched to the centre of London with 200 followers
  • Essex underestimated the queen. Robert Cecil labelled Essex as a traitor. Many of the rebels were offered a pardon and abandoned Essex, who returned home
  • When he returned home, he found that the hostages had been released. He was arrested and accused of treason. The rebellion lasted 12 hours
  • Two weeks later, Essex was put on trial. He named the other rebels in an attempt to save his soul, and was executed on 25th February 1601 in a private execution. Most of the other rebels were just fined
