Peterson and Peterson

• participants were presented with a trigram
• they were asked to count back in threes whilst trying to memorise trigram then they were asked to recall trigram
• found that clear recall falls away quickly over the first 20 seconds
• shows that the duration of the STM is less that 18 seconds
