- COGNITIVE - DYSFUNCTIONAL THOUGHT PROCESSINGlower levels if info processing in some areas of the brain suggest cognition is impaired.E.G reduced processing in the ventral striatum is associated with negative symptoms
- COGNITIVE - METAREPRESENTATIONis the cognitive ability to reflect on thoughts and behaviour.this dysfunction disrupts our ability to recognise our thoughts as our own - could lead to the sensation of hearing voices (hallucination) and experience of having thoughts placed in the mind by others (thought insertion, a delusion)
- COGNITIVE - CENTRAL CONTROL DYSFUNCTIONleads to speech poverty - cognitive ability to suppress automatic responses while performing deliberate actions.people with sz experience derailment of thoughts because each word triggers automatic associations that they cannot suppress.

STIRLING = compared sz to a control group without sz on cognitive tasks. they had to name the ink colour of colour words. = those with sz took over twice as long to read the word rather than the ink colour of the word = schizophrenics do have problems with attention and processing info in their environment, which could explain their disorganised speech
- (+) COGNITIVEit has led to to useful applications in terms of CBT treatment to be used for sz patients. the aim is to get patients to explain their delusions and then use the ABC model/strategy. whilst the therapy may nit stop hallucinations, it aims to help the patients identify when they might occur and develop coping strategies = CBT has been a useful additional treatment that has been used for sz patients, thanks to cognitive explanations
- (-) COGNITIVEproblems identifying cause and effect.it is hard to determine if the cognitive deficits and biases that cause sz or does sz cause the cognitive deficits and biases. = cognitive accounts of sz may just represent the symptoms of sz, rather than outline a cause for it
