  • a strength is that there is a lot of supporting evidence for the different types of LTM such as patient HM and Clive Wearing. Both their semantic memories wasn't effecting as they understood meaning of words and their procedural memories were intact as they knew how to walk, talk and play piano. This evidence supporting Tulvings idea of different memory stores in the LTM as one can be damaged and the others unaffected
  • a counter argument from clinical evidence is that there is a lack of control variables as the brain injuries experienced were unexpected so there is no clinical evidence of what their memory was like before the accident. have no way of controlling variables which means it cannot be repeated and reduces the validity
  • a limitation is that there is conflicting research findings linking LTM to areas of the brain. Buckner and Peterson reviewed evidence regarding location of semantic and episodic memory and found that episodic memory is located on the left side of the prefrontal cortex. Challenges any neuropsychological evidence to support types of memory as there is a pool of agreement on where each type might be located
  • a strength is that understanding the types of LTM allows psychologists to help people with memory problems. Due to the real life application of when people age they experience memory loss and research shows this seems to be specific to episodic memory and it becomes more difficult to recall personal events. This shows that distinguishing between types of LTM enables specific treatments to be developed
