Evaporation / Crystallisation

Cards (3)

  • Evaporation - separates a soluble solid from a liquid - E.G. copper sulphate crystals can be separated from copper sulphate solution using this method.
  • Evaporation
    • Involves evaporating the solution to a much smaller volume and then leaving it to cool - as solution cools, crystals of the soluble solid form.
  • Evaporation - notes:
    • Water that evaporates, not the solution.
    • The slower the rate of cooling, the larger the crystals that form.
    • If all the water is evaporated, a powder forms rather than crystals.
