  • the aim is for the interviewer ro use the set of instructions to replicate the context of the original event and to search through memories using a variety of retrieval methods
  • there are 4 elements of a cognitive interview: reinstating the context, reporting everything, reverse the order, challenging perspective
  • reinstating the context is when the memory of the crime is enhanced when the psychological environment is similar to the one at the event
  • you then have to report everything so the interviewer needs to generate focuses concentration and there should be no interruption to the chain of thought
  • reverse the order is when the witness should be encouraged by the interviewer to make as many attempts at retrieval as possible by recalling information in a different order
  • changing the perspective means that the interviewee is encouraged to try and remember from a different perspective
