• a strength is that fisher researched into the effectiveness of cognitive interview by testing it in the field and he found that after police were trained in cognitive interview they produced 47% more information. This shows a strong support from the field experiment
• a strength is that there is evidence that it works as there was a meta analysis done by kohken and he combined data from 55 studies that comparing cognitive interviews and standard interviews. The meta anaylsis found that on average it gave a 41% increase of accurate information.
• a weakness of kohken's meta analysis is that he also found an increase in inaccurate information recalled especially with cognitive interviews
• a weakness is that not all element are equally effective or useful. Bull found that each of the 4 techniques used alone produced more information than a standard interview . Also, some elements and combinations of some produce better recall than the combination of all 4 which casts doubt on the credibility of the cognitive interview
