• the aim was to examine the formulation of early attachment
• 60 newborn babies from working class families and Glasgow were studies in the first year of their lives and again at 18 months
• observations were conducted as well as interviews with the mother
• they were testing to see if the baby had separation protest and stranger anxiety
• they found that the babies started to show separation protest between 6-8 months
• most infants developed multiple attachments
• it concluded that the pattern of attachment formation common to all infant suggests that it is biologically controlled
