Outsiders vs of mice and men

Cards (8)

  • Outsiders was set in the 1960s in Tulsa Oklahoma,”The outsiders“ is primarily set in a working class neighbourhoo,in which I’d dived between the wealthy socs (west) and the less fortunate greasers (east). The neighbourhood inhabits 2 rival groups, the greasers and the socs.
  • Of mice and men takes place in California “ Golden California to be precise the story takes place during the great depression the setting varies from the ranch where George and Lennie worked and the surrounding areas which is the countryside. of mice and men begins with a descriptive line of the setting “ A few miles of Soledad that Salinas river drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green”
  • The mood of both novels are isolation. Isolation is depicted socially in terms of the greasers. The greasers are socially isolated due to the social status. They often face prejudice and discrimination as a result of their social economic status. The quote that skilfully illustrates this is “greasers will be greasers and socs will still be socs. Sometimes I think it’s the middle ones that are really lucky stiffs”
  • Character isolation is conveyed; particularly Johnny cade. Johnny Cade comes from an abusive home and he feels as though he’s disconnected from his family. Social isolation is clearly conveyed through George and Lennie who are migrant workers during the great depression. They are continuously on the move, unable to form a long-term relationship with others due to the transient nature. George stated “guys like us … the loneliest guys in the world”
  • Both novels had similar social values in terms of friendship. In the outsiders and of mice and men friendship is a prominent social value. In the outsiders the divide between the greasers and the socs illustrates prejudice, but the tightknit friendship among the greasers represses it as they showcase loyalty to one another overcoming societal barriers. additionally in depth friendships are highlighted between George and Lennie and in the outsiders ponyboy and Johnny, both frienships demonstrate how the power of togetherness suppresses hardship.
  • In of mice and men crooks the only black man on the ranch is profoundly influenced by the world he lives in as a black man working on a ranch during the great depression. Crooks experiences a significant amount of racism and discrimination.
  • Which limits his opportunities and isolates him from the other workers. Crooks stated “a young man goes nuts if it ain’t got nobody.” Racial slurs are constantly utilised to describe him. Crooks’experiences shapes his perspective on the world and his interaction with others, particularly Lennie. Crooks torments Lennie despite him comprehending Lennie’s disability. Crooks scares him by suggesting that George will abandon him and leave him all alone.
    • Between the 2,Crooks is arguably more influenced by the world he lives in,as he significantly impacted by the depth of racism, which results in loneliness as opposed to Johnny who faces challenges but he has the company of others.
    • In conclusion both characters are strongly influenced by the world they live in,as a result of social inequality which results in racism and discrimination in the case of “Of Mice and Men”.
