• Al-Qadr


  the Muslim term for ‘predestination’ which Muslims believe God has set out fate and destiny for all things

  example/explanation- Allah is omnipotent and that is in control of eveything even our own lives
• Ummah 


  Means ‘community’ and refers to the world wide community of Muslims who share a common religious identity

  example/explanation- Muslims often pray shoulder to shoulder or wear white to symbolise the belief that everyone within the ummah is equal in the eyes of Allah
• Mosque 


  A place of worship for Muslims. it’s name often translates as ‘place of prostration’

  example/explanation- Muslims often worship as a community in a mosque particularly on a Friday
• Mecca/makkah 


  Islams holiest city located in Saudi Arabi. it is where muslims go to preform hajj

  explanation- Mecca is the birth place of Muhammad and is the site of the important features such as the ka’bah or the house of ‘God’ Muslims will always pray in the direction of Mecca
• Lesser Jihad


  the word jihad means to struggle or strive. lesser jihad is to physically struggle or have a holy war in defence of Islam

  example/explanation- prophet Muhammad suggests that lesser Jihad should be a last resort
• Eid-Ul-Fitr 


  Celebration of breaking the fast on the day after Ramadan ends

  example/explanation- the feast is a way of celebrating the end of the hardships of the fast the offering Allah thanks for their strength and determination
• hijab 


  A word used to describe the headscarf, veil or modest dress worn by Muslim women

  example/explanation- Muslim women are encouraged to cover everything other than their face and hands as a sign of their modesty
• Burkha 


  A long, loose fitting garment which covers the whole body from head to feet

  example/explanation- A burkha is worn in public by some Muslim women and is compulsory for women in some Islamic countries as a sign of their modesty
• Baptism 


  A sacrament which initiates people into the church family the word means to immerse in water

  example/explanation – Christians baptise people with water to symbolise the washing away of sins

  A sacred text believed by Christians to be inspired by God

  Example/explanation – it’s divided into old and new Testament and contains guidance on how people can live according to gods plans and wishes
• Confirmation 


  A sacrament or a right in which a baptised person affirms or confirms their Christian belief. The word derives from the term for ‘strengthening‘ or ’deepening’

  example/explanation- through confirmation Christians believe they become a full member of the church and will start receiving holy communion
• Eucharist 


  The term means thanksgiving. it may also be called holy communion and is the christian sacrament of sharing bread and wine- body and blood of Jesus.

  example/explanation- during the last supper Jesus instructed his disciples to practice holy communion as a reminder of his sacrifice on the cross

  The ability to make our own choices especially moral choices. It is the belief that we are independent and free to do as we wish so that none of our decisions are predetermined.

  Example/explanation – some Christians argue that the account of adam and eve implies humans were given free will that explains why there’s moral evil in the world
• Heaven and hell


  Heaven is a state in the afterlife where Christians believe that those who have accepted God’s grace and forgiveness will go for eternity. Hell is a state of punishment for those who rejected God

  Example/explanation – Christians believe heaven is where god the father resides
• Judgment 


  the belief that god will determine weather out action will earn us entry into the kingdom of heaven.

  example/explanation- many christians believe that there will be a judgment day where god will judge the living and the dead
• Marriage symbols


  The features of a marriage ceremony that reflect and indicate the importance and meaning of marriage

  example/explanation- Christians often wear a wedding ring as a symbol of eternal love and a hope for a smooth marriage. The white dress is also a symbol of purity and chasity

  A scared of religious journey to a place of religious significance. it is done as an act of service and deviation

  example/explanation- Christians May travel to Jerusalem to follow the footsteps of Jesus whilst Muslims go to Makkah for hajj

  The ways in which god choose to reveal or show his nature to human kind

  example/explanation- bible was recorded by men the content was revealed by god

  Promises made between people or a persons promise to god.

  example/explanation- wedding vows a promise to love one another ‘in sickness and in health’ ‘for richer for poorer’ ‘till death us do part’

  Refers to the process of logical thought or ability to think in a logical way.

  example/explanation- our reason is the voice of god within us we have been made in gods image
