Spiritual Resurrection - Paul’s letter

Cards (8)

  • ...glory of the celestial is one and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon...'

Refers to celestial and terrestrial bodies. Glory of sun is different to stars and moon - everything is different in nature. Everything is made up of different matter
  • So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power'

The physical body is perishable and the soul is imperishable. When Jesus was resurrected he was given a physical body but the soul stayed the same and that's what was really raised. The new body of a plant is different to the seed
  • It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body. Thus it is written 'the first man Adam became a living being'
Our new body that we inherit at death is a spiritual body. Physical dies; spiritual becomes our new life. Adam represents the first person with a physical body
  • The last Adam became a life giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual which is first but the physical and then the spiritual'

Last Adam refers to Jesus. Because Adam caused the first sin, Jesus saved us from sin. Jesus' resurrection represents the new spiritual life that we will all inherit at death. Adam was born first so we must have a physical being then spiritual
  • First man was from the earth; a man of dust... just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven'
Adam made of dust, represents our human existence. Jesus represents our spiritual being. We have borne the image of Adam because we were all born in sin but because of Jesus we will be born again in heaven. God created a new link between humans and himself. God sent Jesus to release us from sin
  • Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of god, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable'
Our physical body prevents us from entering heaven because heaven is spiritual. Flesh and blood cannot inherit heaven. That perishable nature must die first and take on a spiritual nature. 'We shall not all sleep' Jesus will return soon
  • For this perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal nature must put on immortality'
Our physical body must change into a spiritual body. One that will last eternally
  • Summary of Paul's letter
    - only our soul can be raised not our physical body. Our physical body has to be dead for us to take on an imperishable spiritual nature
    - Links the whole idea of death and resurrection to planting a seed. If the seed that is sown is perishable, the imperishable is raised
    - Adam is the first human life and represents the first person with a physical body. The last Adam refers to Jesus, Adam was the first sinner and Jesus is taking away that sin. Releases us from sin and creates a new relationship with God and humans
