Judgement, heaven, hell and purgatory as psychological

Cards (4)

  • Why do some believe in a psychological reality?
They believe that judgement, heaven and hell are not real because there is no empirical evidence for any kind of existence after death; the idea that behaviour in human physical life can make a difference to their experience after death seems pointless.
  • What does John Milton say?
'The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heav'n of hell, a hell of heav'n.' Hell is suffering. Heaven is overcoming the suffering. Every individual has the power to change their mindset in a situation
  • What does Freud say?
The human psyche was governed by conscious and unconscious urges, and that conflict between different aspects of the psyche leads to mental suffering. Religious belief was the result of neurosis
