mitosis

    Cards (7)

    • what are the stages in interphase
growth, DNA synthesis, growth and preparation for mitosis. this is where organelles double, cell grows and DNA replicates
    • when is mitosis used
growth and repair for example in clonal expansion of B cells
    • what happens during prophase
chromosomes condense and become visible. the centrioles separate and move to opposite ends of the cell. the role of the centrioles is creating spindle fibres that attach to centromere and chromatids, which plants lack. the nucleolus disappears.
    • what happens during metaphase
chromosomes align along the equator, then spindle fibres attach to centromere and chromatids.
    • what happens during anaphase
spindle fibres start to retract and pull centromere and chromatids. this causes centromere to divide into 2 so individual chromatids are pulled. these separate chromatids are now referred to as chromosomes. this process requires ATP.
    • what happens during telophase
chromosomes at each pole become longer and thinner, and the spindle fibres disintegrate. the nucleus reforms and cytokinesis occurs, where the cytoplasm splits in 2 creating 2 genetically identical cells.
    • equation for mitotic index
number of cells in mitosis/ total number of cells
