Lesson 12

Cards (22)

  • World Map: Resized by Population
  • World map resized by population
    • Small countries with high population density increase in size
    • Large countries with small population shrink in size
  • Population density
Number of people (population) divided by land area, measured in square kilometers (km²)
  • Bangladesh is the most densely-populated large country in the world, with 1,252 people per square kilometer. It's more than twice as dense as South Korea – the second most densely populated country at 528 people per square kilometer.
  • Note: Philippines is the most densely populated.
  • Population growth
    1. Temporary to personal settlement
    2. Technological Advancements
  • Around the year 1800 the world population was only around 1 billion people. On average the population grew very slowly over this long time from 10,000 BCE to 1700 (by 0.04% annually). The world population was around 1 billion in the year 1800 and increased 7-fold since then.
  • Around 108 billion people have ever lived on our planet; today's population size makes up 6.5% of the total number of people ever born.
  • Population by region
    • Asia (60% today, 68% two hundred years ago)
    • North America (31-fold increase)
    • Latin America (28-fold increase)
    • Europe (3-fold increase)
    • Africa (14-fold increase)
  • Top 5 most populous countries
    • China (1.42 billion)
    • India (1.37 billion)
    • United States (329 million)
    • Indonesia (269 million)
    • Brazil (212 million)
  • India will overtake China as the world's most populous country within the next decade.
  • Future population growth
    1. Population growth rate peaked around half a century ago at 2.1% per year
    2. Population growth has slowed to just over 1% per year
    3. Population growth will fall to 0.1% by the end of the century
  • Demographic transition
The big global demographic transition that the world entered more than two centuries ago is coming to an end: This new equilibrium is different from the past when high mortality kept population growth in check. In the new balance it will be low fertility that keeps population changes small.
  • Global migration
A situation in which people go to live in foreign countries, especially in order to find work
  • Most global migration is from developing countries to developed ones.
  • In 2017, over a billion people migrated: 244 million went abroad and 763 million moved within their home country.
  • Top destination countries for international migration
    • United States (49,777,000 migrants in 2017)
    • UAE (migrants are 88.4% of its total population)
  • Kahit top destination ang US, uunti lang ang sakop nila sa population. So uunti lang sila compared sa locals. While UAE, kahit unti ang migrant, majority ng population nila ay migrants. They overpower the locals.
  • Top destination cities for international migration
    • Dubai (83% foreign-born population)
    • Brussels (62% foreign-born population)
  • Emerging centers for growth
    • Sao Paulo, Brazil
    • Moscow, Russia
    • Cape Town, South Africa
    • Naga, Philippines
    • Davao, Philippines
  • Other areas have become both an origin, as well as a destination for migration. For instance, while Nigerians head into China, many Chinese are heading to the Middle East and Africa.
  • China has cheap labor.
