• ADVANTAGE: ⦁ The researcher has firsthand experience with the participant.

  ⦁ The researcher can record information as it occurs.

  ⦁ Unusual aspects can be noticed during the observation

  ⦁ Useful In exploring topics that are difficult or uncomfortable for the participants to discuss.
• DISADVANTAGE

  ⦁ The researcher may be seen as Intrusive

  ⦁ "Private" information may be observed that the researcher cannot report.

  ⦁ The researcher may not have good attending and observing skills

  ⦁ Certain Information (e.g. children may present special problems in gaining rapport)
