Information enters our sensory register through our five senses
How is information stored in short term memory?
By sound so we can rehearse the information
Short term memory holds between 5 and 9 items at a time
Information is held in the sensory register for 2 seconds
Information lasts between 15 and 30 seconds in the short term memory store
There is no limit to the amount of information that can be stored in Long term memory
Information in the long term memory store can last forever.
Retrieval means finding information and bringing it out of storage
The three stages of encoding are sensory register, short term memory (STM), and long term memory (LTM)
Conclusion of multi store memory
Useful as understanding of separate memory stores can improve teaching strategies and help retain information but may be less useful as doesn’t address how we manipulate real time information so may not fully capture intricacies of human memory process.
Strength 3 of msm
Murdock found that recall was higher for words at the beginning (sent to LTM) and words at the end of the list (still in STM) with words in the middle more often forgotten (displacement). This supports msm as it shows that memory has two distinct stores STM and LTM.
