Solar System- A system that revolves around the sun
System- Composed of different parts working together as a whole
the Sun is a STAR (medium sized)
Galaxy- A group of stars and planets all together (We live in the milky way galaxy)
Oort Cloud- A cloud of ice and dust at the edge of our solar system
Asteroid Belt- The space between Mars and Jupiter where there are many asteroids
Kuiper Belt- An area beyond Neptune's orbit with small, rocky objects called Kuiper Belts Objects(KBOs) which include Pluto.
stars- always have their own light, self luminous, very big, colorful
STAR COLORS: yellow- sun, red- giants, blue- Hottest, white
Sun- enables as to have light in the day
Moon- enables us to have light in the night, not self-luminous, reflects sunlight, 1/4 of its surface is covered by oceans, 1/3 of its surface is covered by mountains, 1/3 of its surface is covered by craters
Planet- A celestial body that orbits around the Sun, has enough gravity to pull itself into a spherical shape, can be seen without using telescopes, does not emit it's own light but reflect light from other sources
Venus- Second closest planet to the sun, second largest planet, thick clouds made up of sulfuric acid, hotter than mercury, no water on the surface, no moons
Mercury- Closest planet to the sun, smallest planet, no atmosphere, volcanic activity, no moons
Gravity- makes it possible to have a solar system
The Earth has 365 and 1/4 days to revolve around the sun= 1 year travelling around the sun
Day- Rotation
Year- Revolution (you go around something)
orbit- is not a perfect circle its an ellipse or an oval
Order of closest to the sun- Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
comet- a ball of dust and gas that orbits the sun and is visible in the night sky
Halley's comet- 1705, 1986,
Atmosphere- makes the asteroid disintegrate
A shooting star is NOT A STAR, it does not have its own light, its just a meteor that burns up when it enters the atmosphere
Planetesimal- a large solid object formed from the gravitational collapse of a protoplanetary disk. CAME FROM SOLAR NEBULA
SOLAR NEBULA- The cloud of dust and gas that surrounds the sun
Planetesimal - planets - asteroids
Light Year- The distance light travels in a year.
The brightest star in the sky other than the sun is Sirius
The largest object in the solar system is the star
Force of attraction between the earth and the moon is GRAVITY
The moons gravity is 1/6 that of the Earths
Comet is made of a dense core of dust and gas surrounded by a thin layer of ice and a tail of dust and gas (water and ice)
change of seasons is caused by the earths tilt on its axis and the earths orbit around the sun
heliocentric- the earth orbits the sun, not the other way around
Geocentric- The Earth is the center of the universe and everything revolves around it.
comet- a ball of dust and gas that orbits the sun and is visible in the night sky (frozen)
meteor- a small piece of rock or metal that is thrown into space by a collision with another object
asteroid- a large rocky body orbiting the sun that is not a planet
Astronauts weigh more on Earth than they do on the Moon because the moon has less gravity on the earth
