• Largely self intrested in that they serve the interests of their own members and supporters
• Although they seek public support they tend to promote direct links with decision makers
• There methods tend to be more subtle and less in the public eye and usually take parliamentary route of influence
• Usually have a formal and closed membership
• Sectional groups specifiy in a specific wokrforce
• national education union is a eaxmple of this
