  • when people can't get enough access to safe nutritious food they can't eat the right balance of nutrients - this causes malnourishment, this can limit a child's development
  • people need clean, safe water for drinking, cooking and washing. without proper sanitation water source can become polluted by raw sewage causing water-borne diseases
  • energy is needed for industry, transport and homes. electricity allows countries to develop industry creating jobs and wealth
  • those without electricity often find new ways of replacing it, burning wood leads to deforestation and kerosene stoves can release harmful fumes
  • global distribution of resources is uneven, some countries don't have their own energy reserves, other's have unsuitable climates for food production
  • to access more resources some countries have to import them or find technological solutions to produce more - this is expensive
  • HIC consumption of resources is great as they can afford to buy resources they need
  • NEE consumption is increasing rapidly as industry is developing quickly meaning population and wealth growth is increasing
  • consumption is low in LICs because they can't afford to exploit available resources or import lacking resources
