• Why was the scheme needed?

  Hitosa has very few reliable water sources
• How does it work?

  Gravity fed water scheme takes water form two permanent springs, through 140km of pipeline to over 100 public water points and 150 private connections related to agriculture.
• Positives of the scheme:

  1. People charged very little and it is used to maintain the project

  2. Managed by communities

  3. Still working after 20 years

  4. Serves 32 villages and 3 small towns

  5. Water aid provided half the cost
• Negatives of the scheme:

  1. Hygiene is neglected spreading disease

  2. Farmers are using for livestock causing disputes

  3. No education about sanitation

  4. Pipeline has to be replace

  5. Encouraged migration = overuse
