• Pope had issued a papal bull to catholics in england
• Plan was murder elizabeth, replace her with Mary, and Norfolk would marry Mary
• Elizabeth’s spy network uncovered the plot
• Bag of gold coins with coded letters was stopped going north. The cipher code was found under norfolks doormat
• Norfolk confessed and was executed in 1572
• Ridolfi was abroad when the plot was uncovered so escaped punishment
• Elizabeth didn’t punish Mary
