  • Justices are appointed for life
    the president or Congress cannot remove them if the make decisions that they do not like
  • Vacancies on the Supreme Court only occur if a current justice dies, retires or is impeached
    Prevents the other branches of government packing the Court with their allies
  • The Constitution prevents the salary of the justices being lowered during their time in office

    The salary is fixed so they do not have to concerned about repercussions from the president or Congress if they vote against them in a case

  • Justices are nominated by the president and approved by the Senate
    prevents one branch from dominating the SUpreme Court and filling it with people of an ideology similar to theirs

    protects the Cort's independence by giving Judges their own power
