• Ethene is a gas produced by aging parts of a plant
• It influences growth of a plant by controlling cell division
• Stimulates enzymes that cause ruit to ripen
• Can be used to speed up the ripening of fruits
• Ripening can be delayed by adding chemicals which block ethene's effect on the fruit or reduce the ammount of ethene a plant can produce
