• DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid
• DNA strands are polymers made up of repeating units, called nucleotides
• Each nucleotide consists of a sugar, a phosphate group and a base
• The sugar and phosphate groups in the nucleotides form a backbone to the DNA strands. The sugar and phosphate groups alternate: A-T G-C.
• The order of the bases code for the order of the amino acid in the protein
