Survival of the Fittest

• Darwin came up with the theory of survival of the fittest
• He knew organisms in a species show wide variation (phenotypic variation). He also knew that organisms had to compete for limited resources in an ecosystem
• He concluded that the organisms with the most suitable characteristics for the environment would be most likely to survive, this is known as survival of the fittest
• Over time, beneficial characteristics become more common and the species changes, it evolves
