    • Uses text media, visual media, multimedia, etc. in disseminating information and imparting knowledge.
    • Media Practitioners - provide information coming from their expert knowledge or first- hand experience of event.
  • People as Media
    • They are the media itself.
    • Person serves as the medium for another person to learn.
  • People as Media Examples
    • Opinion Leaders - highly exposed to and actively use media. Source of viable interpretation of messages for lower-end media users. Opinions are accepted by a group.
    • Citizen Journalism - people without professional journalism training can use the tools of modern technology and internet to create, augment or fact-check media on their own or in collaboration with others.
  • People as Media Examples
    • Social Journalism - using social media to make the content available to more people.
    • Crowdsourcing - obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community.
  • Types of Journalist by Medium
    • Print Journalists - usually for newspaper/magazines.
    • Photojournalists - highly-trained photographers that are more interested in capturing images that tell a story.
    • Broadcast Journalists - both television and radio news. Can be behind the scene (research for the report) or on the air (read stories crafted by their colleagues).
    • Multimedia Journalists newest and fastest growing field. Have a wide set of storytelling abilities, as well as highly defined technical skills.

    • Assembly of people with common interest where they become the main means of communication.
    • Refers to persons that are involved in the use, analysis, evaluation and production of media and information
    • Types of people media include:
    1. Idea Generators: writers, painters, content creators
    2. Speakers: Politicians, newscasters, announcers, hosts
    Users: End users of the media platform
  • Characteristics of Social Media
    Individualized, builds profiles: likes, personal details
    Connects with friends and people: friend referrals
    Uploads content in real time
    Enables conversations: public and private
    Provides tracking: history and threads
  • Formats and Examples of Social Media
    1. Relationship or Social Networks: Facebook
    2. Microblogging: Twitter, Instagram
    3. Special Interest Networks: LinkedIn, Pinterest
    4. Media Sharing: YouTube, Flickr
    5. Collaborative News: Reddit, Waze
    6. Discussion Forums: Google Groups
    7. Group Buying/Merchant Sites: OLX, Groupon, Dealgrocer
    8. Virtual Worlds: Farmville, World of Warcraft
  • People create and propagate different kind of information for different purposes.
    Different effects depend upon the interpretation of end users. Effects can be:
    Short or long and lasting
    Big or small
    Direct or indirect
    Positive or negative
    • Trends in social media include:
    1. Culture and sensitivity
    2. Bashing and bullying
    • Positive outlook and content, citizen journalism, vlogging, criticisms, fame, opinions, political discourse create impacts
  • Advantages of Using Social Media
    Relationships - Physically apart persons can continue to communicate at a lower cost (send pictures, livestream), strengthening their ties.
    Diversion/Entertainment - Allows users to have a respite from their busy schedules.
    Learning - Provides real-time collaborative platforms. Resources can be made readily available.
    Recognition - Instant recognition by liking a picture
    Career Progression - Easier to market oneself through social media. Connections and referrals are established more quickly.
  • Limitations of Using Social Media
    Relationships - People expect family/friends to respond immediately.
    Diversion/Entertainment - Can be addictive. Others find it hard to focus on their tasks and manage their time wisely.
    Learning - Teachers need to develop skills for a more inclusive way of facilitated learning. Not all information is accurate and valid.
    Recognition - Created a need for validation and attention.
    Career Progression - No separation of private and professional. What is posted about the private self might affect the professional.
