Physics topic 3: Heating

Cards (8)

  • Latent heat
The energy required or released when one kilogram of a substance changed state
  • Equation for power using voltage
    Power = Voltage x current
  • Equation for work done
Work done = Voltage x current x time
  • Required practical method for Specific Heat Capacity
Record the mass of the aluminium block
Place and secure the insulation (foam) around the block
Place a heater in the large hole
Connect the ammeter, power pack and heater in seriers
    Connect the Voltmeter in parallel
Use a pipette and put a small amount of water in the small hole
    Put themometer in this hole
Turn on power pack - turns on heater
    Record ammeter and voltmeter readings
    Calculate power on the heater
Measure temperature every minute for 10 minutes and record
  • Change in energy = Mass x Latent heat
  • Change in energy (With SHC)
Change in energy = Mass x Specific heat capacity x Change in temperature
  • Internal energy
The energy of the particles that is caused by their individual motions and positions
  • Internal energy is the sum of
Kinetic energy - due to their individual motions
Potential energy - they have due to individual positions relative to each other
