Competition

• Biotic factors - living factors of the environment
• Ecosystem - the interaction of a community of living organisms and the non living parts of their environment
• Plants need light, space, water and mineral ions from the soil
• Animals need territory, food, water and mates
• Organisms compete with other species for the same resources
• In a community, each species depends on another for things such as food, shelter, pollination and seed dispersal
• The interdependence of all living things means any major change can have far reach effects
• Stable communities are ones where the species and environmental factors are in balance so the population sizes are roughly constant
