    Narrowing the gap - key social + economic indicators between most deprived areas and rest of country
    Targets + funding - local authorities set targets by gov to increase health, education and employment opportunities with funding to help

  • EXAMPLE: New Deal for Communities (NDCS) - Ocean Estate, E London:
    Tony Blair Labour gov
    NDCS set up as 10 year strategy to transform 39 most deprived neighbourhoods, 10 in London
    • NDC partnership involved local businesses, community and authorities
    • £2bn funding over 10 years, £800m extra from private sector
    • Workless generation and 'worklessness' - generations of families suffering from attitude to unemployment
  • EXAMPLE: New Deal for Communities (NDCS) - Ocean Estate, E London:

    • Smaller scale
    • Bigger facilities e.g. parks
    • Education improvement > classrooms with interactive whiteboards, laptops, after school clubs with parents involved
    • Locals, parents and elderly can use school to improve their knowledge
    • 3 year project - outdoor play areas
    • Childcare centre on estate - single parents go to work
    • Community centre running activities, improve fitness + health
  • EXAMPLE: New Deal for Communities (NDCS) ~ successes:
    1. Biggest improvements seen were in how residents felt about their neighbourhoods, community belonging > decrease motive to commit crime e.g. burglary
    2. Between 2002,2008 32/36 key indicators improved
    3. 10/13 local authority area indicators saw a narrowing i=of the gap, mainly in burglary statistics and educational achievement > better relationship between community and police
  • EXAMPLE: New Deal for Communities (NDCS) ~ failures:
    1. More change happened that was place related rather than people related indicators, little change did happen
    2. Improving educational achievement was one area that experienced least success > more needed to be understood on local levels about which strategies worked
    3. Little change statistically for 'worklessness' - seen as being key indicator which includes soc and econ wellbeing of individual
