Food Chains

• Always start with a producer, which produce their own food using energy from the sun
• Producers are usually green plants or algae
• Biomass can be thought of as energy stored in a plant
• Producers are eaten by primary consumers, which are eaten by secondary consumers and then tertiary consumers
• Consumers which hunt and kill other animals are called predators
• The population of a species is limited by the food available
• As a population of prey increases, the population of the predators increases
