  • Homeostasis is the regulation of internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function
  • Homeostasis can occur if theres a change in the environment or the body
  • Homeostasis needs to strictly control these levels to survive:
    • Water Levels
    • Temperature
    • Sugar levels
  • Body temperature is important as the bodys enzymes work at a temperature of 37
  • Ways body temperature is regulated:
    • Shivering - Muscles relax and contract, producing heat
    • Blood flows away from extremities
  • Extremities are parts of the body with a large surface area to volume ratio, so absorb heat easier. Blood flows away from these in cold conditions, so heat can be conserved in the core of the body
  • Examples of homeostasis:
    • Sweating to cool down
    • Shivering to warm up
