WMM

Cards (5)

  • Baddeley and Hitch 1974
    • Central executive: monitors/coordinates all other mental functions in working memory
    • Working memory model: an explanation of the memory used when working on a task. Each store is qualitatively different
  • Baddeley and Hitch 1974
    • Episodic buffer: receives input from many sources, temporarily stores the info, then integrates it to construct a mental ‘episode’ of the experience
    • Phonological loop: codes sounds in working memory (phonological stores, the words you hear, and articulatory process, your inner voice)
    • Visuo-spatial sketchpad: codes visual information (visual cache, form/colour/info about objects, inner scribe, arrangements of objects)
  • AO3 Limit:
    • Case studies problematic - they are similar cases, and their injuries may have caused trauma affecting their brain
    • Central executive basically the same thing as ‘attention’ is MSM, and many feel it is actually made of many components - Eslinger and Damasio (1985), EVR case study, he performed well on reasoning, but had poor decision making, suggesting a damaged CE
  • AO3 Support
    • Baddeley and Hitch 1974, showed when asked to do 2 tasks, Ps did worse when tasks involve both central executive and articulatory loop (demonstrates dual task effects)
    • Shallice and Warrington (1970), KF case study, he only seemed to have issues with auditory/phonological loop, displays separate systems
  • AO3 support
    • Trojano and Grossi (1995), SC case study, performed well on learning tasks unless they were read out loud
    • Farah (1988), LH, could perform better in spatial tasks than those involving visual imagery
    • WMM supports STM, by using articulatory process, it becomes easier to remember - reflects Baddeley's idea of repetition
