  • The established religion under Elizabeth was Protestant, so the English did not acknowledge the authority of the Pope in Rome: the English monarch was to be the overall leader of the Church of England, but not a spiritual authority. However, there were some actual religious practices that were very similar to the Catholic Church, including the celebration of the mass (also known as Holy Communion) and the priests’ wearing of vestments.

  • Puritan context:
    • Extreme protestants who didn't compromise, wanted all Catholic elements gone
    • Elizabethan settlements was a big dissapointment for them
    • Most prominent Puritans: Dudly and Sir Francis Walsingham
  • Why puritans unhappy:
    • Old roman catholic church was too corupt and too many traditions were superstitous
    • Disappointed and angry at Religous Settlement
  • Why puritans a problem
    • they wanted the Church hierarchy removed and Elizabeth was horrified by their suggestions and saw them as a threat
