metals and non metals

    Cards (8)

    • left side of the periodic table consists of metals
    • properties of metals: good conductors of heat and electricity, ductile (can be stretched into wires), malleable (beaten into different shapes), strong and lustrous (shiny)
    • properties of non-metals: not good conductors (good insulators), brittle (shatter when beaten), weak and dull
    • alloy: a mixture of metals
    • brass: copper and iron
    • rusting: a chemical reaction in which iron is changed into rust
    • rusting requires water, oxygen and metal to occur
    • painting, oiling and galvanising are the best ways to prevent rusting
