  • Scrutiny- examine the work of r government and hold it to account by forcing ministers to explain their policy and perhaps even dismissing a government through a vote of no confidence
  • Vote of no confidenc- dismisses the government and force an election and if it’s defeated than it shows that parliament has confidence in the government
  • Passing and examining legislation (legislative function)- amendments can be made to improve legislation and protects the interest of others and parliament should ensure that only worthwhile laws are passed
  • Representation - MPs are expected to ensure that interests of their constituencies are protected and there also needs to be a resemblance which is the idea that representative institutions should be staffed by people who come from a varity of diff backgrounds
  • Role of legitimation which is granting consent on behalf the people when it voted in favour of bills
