respiration

Cards (10)

  • respiration is the process of energy release from food inside living organisms
  • we need energy to live, e.g to grow, move, reproduce
  • aerobic respiration is the release of energy from glucose when oxygen is available
  • aerobic respiration equation:
    glucose+oxygen➡️CO2+water+(energy)
  • when exercising the body needs lots of energy so aerobic respiration increases in the muscles as there’s more demand for oxygen. breathing becomes deeper and more frequent so the heart starts beating faster to deliver oxygenated blood to the muscle cells faster.
  • anaerobic respiration happens during intense exercise and is when glucose is inefficiently broken down without oxygen
  • anaerobic respiration equation:
    glucose➡️lactic acid(+energy)
  • oxygen debt is the amount of oxygen required to remove lactic acid from the muscles
  • lactic acid is harmful and extra oxygen is needed to break it down
  • energy can be released in the form of heat during respiration
