Reasons for support

Cards (6)

  • Big Business
    • They were worried that Communists in Germany were trying to steal their business and wealth
    • Hitler and the Nazis promised to protect them from the Communists
    • If they were protected, in return for this, many provided the Nazi party with money which allowed them to grow quicker
    • Some newspaper businesses also devoted entire pages/sections to propaganda pieces for the Nazi party
  • Working classes
    • Hitler made sure that he appealed to everyone in Germany, including the working classes
    • The Nazis started showing 'Work and bread' posters around Germany. This basically told people that one of their priorities would be to ensure everyone was employed and had enough food to survive
    • Lots of working classes still supported the Communist party
  • Middle classes

    • This included people in professions such as law, teaching, businessmen etc.
    • They viewed Hitler as strong and loved his passionate speeches
    • They also believed that the Nazis could protect the Germans from communists
    • Believed that in recent years, there had been a moral decline in Germany with many people now going out and drinking. They liked that the Nazis promised to restore traditional values in the country
  • Farmers
    • Hitler appealed to many farmers as he promised to protect their land from being confiscated and given to minority / inferior groups in Germany such as the Jews
    • He also stated that the Nazis would set the price for produce which meant they would earn more money than if another party was in charge
    • Many became richer (at least initially)
  • Young people
    • To gain support, the Nazi party held many rallies across Germany in large cities. These were something new to many Germans
    • The colourful rallies appealed to young people who wanted to get involved
    • Organisations such as the Hitler Youth and League of German Maidens were also set up. Children / teens could take part in lots of different activities in these which meant they liked what the Nazi party was doing for them
  • Women
    • They did not support the Nazis to start with as they saw their views as sexist
    • As the years went on (and the propaganda started to work), many started to believe what the Nazis were telling them – that it was their 'duty to raise the future of Germany'
    • They would be offered rewards for having children (as long as they were pure and healthy) which persuaded many to vote for the Nazis
