    the skills and practices used in saving lives, especially from drowning. Before you can be a lifeguard at a pool or beach, you must pass a lifesaving class

    a tower with a strong light on top to guide ships and warn them of danger. The sailors couldn't see the rocky shore in the dark, but they saw the lighthouse and knew to steer carefully.

    the act of saving a person or thing from danger. The firefighter used a ladder in the rescue; he climbed up and pulled two people out of the building.
