3 - Lyotard

Cards (4)

  • Lyotard is not a postmodernist as such, but describes society as being post-modern. This is typified by social disorder and a cultural vacuum. This means modern societies have no central core values/beliefs.
  • Metanarratives are now seen as oppressive because they impose one way of thinking onto everyone else (reflexivity)
  • Post-modern societies have few community links, no sense of identity and no sense of sentimentality such as old buildings and furniture. Everything is short-term and disunited. We no longer have neighbours, travel for work, or feel the need to unite. We watch TV and play video games instead of talking. This is a collapse of traditional bonds and people are unaware of their true position in this social structure.
  • In post-modernity there is an emphasis on individualism rather than collectivism. People are encouraged to look out for themselves first and foremost. There is less concern with others around them. This is due to the breakdown of traditional family structures and communities. As a result, people are becoming increasingly selfish and self-centred.
