In Ulster, there was greater support for Britain as there was a larger Protestant population. Fears of Catholocism led to the creation of the UlsterUnionist Party in 1886 and was led by EdwardCarson after 1910
The Ulster Unionists had defeated a second home rule bill in 1893 by siding with the Conservatives but when a third home rule bill was proposed in 1912, the Unionists feared that the bill would pass as many Liberals now supported it
